World Language Department Statement of Philosophy

The World Language curriculum is designed to meet the needs of students in a culturally diverse society and in a world of global interdependence. Through the study of a language other than their own, students gain insight into another people’s culture and become aware of cultural differences and similarities.

Most importantly, students gain knowledge of their own language, culture and society. All languages consist of semantics, syntax, grammar, and vocabulary. Language and culture are determining factors in the way people think, the way they communicate, and the way they behave. Language serves to define a given cultural community.

The World Language curriculum will build on the relationships of different people, their cultures, and language, in order to help students become open-minded citizens, who are linguistically and culturally sensitive and knowledgeable in a multicultural, global society.
